Department: Hot Summer Nights

Reports to Director of Youth Development

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Seasonal

Summary: To assist with creating a quality Friday night environment to promote the personal, educational, and social development of young people. The person selected for this position shall be a high school graduate or equivalent. Youth workers promote the personal, educational, and social development of young people aged between 5 and 19. Programs aim to engage young people, redress inequalities, value opinions and empower individuals to take action on issues affecting their lives, including health, education, unemployment, and the environment, by developing positive skills and attitudes.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Assessing the needs of young people, and planning and delivering programs related to areas such as health, fitness, smoking, drugs, relationships, and bullying.
  • Supervision of participants at all times.
  • Participates in ALL planned activities.
  • Remain in assigned areas as directed by the supervisor.
  • Setting a good example for participants.
  • Implement arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, residential activities, outdoor education, and sporting activities.
  • Befriending and supporting individuals in various settings.
  • Mentoring and supporting individuals to encourage social inclusion.
  • Meeting, liaising, and networking with police, educational establishments, social services, and other agencies to address issues and promote opportunities for young people.
  • Manage and administer youth and community projects and resources.
  • Mentor and support individuals to encourage social inclusion.
  • Set up/take down/clean up at the end of each event.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Pass background checks, and drug tests, and submit fingerprints.

  • Commit to the full length of the program
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • The working dress code shall be comfortable and appropriate. Open-toe sandals are NOT permitted.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality, and remain open to various ideas and viewpoints.
  • Ability to participate in outside activities.
  • Demonstrate organizational ability and attention to detail.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in leadership and community engagement programs is preferred.

This job operates in an early childhood school and professional environment. This role continually uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Guadalupe Centers serves a diverse population, including children, adolescents, and adults, who may have mental or behavioral health problems. Consequently, all GC staff must demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions, and appropriate role modeling. Hostility, aggression, unnecessary or inappropriate physical actions, and inappropriate emotional expression are not acceptable behaviors for our employees. This position may also be exposed to the outdoors during the summer months and may be exposed to heat, sun, and other factors. This position will interact with children and may be exposed to noises daily.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally push items of 45 lbs. such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, and work output. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
