POSITION SUMMARY:

KERA is seeking a dynamic, curious and charismatic host for a new daily local news program. This role requires more than just sounding good behind a mic - the host will be one of the faces and voices of a show designed to bring North Texans together around the stories that shape their day. As a host, you will work with a co-host and show producers to build a bridge between KERA’s morning and afternoon news coverage by talking with newsmakers, influencers, contributors and KERA News reporters about the day’s stories. You’ll also balance the hard news with a lighter touch by looking at arts, culture, and what it’s like to live in North Texas. A successful candidate will be committed to helping the audience understand how the news of the day connects to their lives and be driven to better connect listeners to their community.

This position is classified as FLSA exempt, is not eligible for overtime and reports to the Executive Producer, Talk.

  • Host daily live show, including frequent remote tapings or broadcasts.
  • Research,script and conduct interviews on the day’s news and regularly occurring segments with newsmakers, regular contributors and KERA staff, both life and pre-recorded.
  • Work with producers to reimagine and edit show content for later use across digital and broadcast platforms.
  • Doadditional reporting and producing for broadcast and digital content.
  • Moderate discussions at community events that will be captured for laterbroadcast and digital presentations.
  • Maintain a regular social media presence across platforms to further engage with audience
  • Develop engaging program ideas and creative approaches to covering news and current affairs.
  • Work with show producers and KERANews team to build a roster of community thought leaders, sources and contributors to talk with on-air when news dictates.
  • Maintain the highest editorial standards of accuracy,ethics and balance.
  • Ensure that guests and on-air voices reflect communities across North Texas.
  • Represent KERA at professional and public events as assigned.
  • Work in a manner that is consistent with KERA’s mission, vision and values; and maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years in journalism, content creation or relevant experience.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects/priorities ondeadline.
  • Knowledge of/experience in audio production and editing.
  • Established social media presence plus knowledge of current social media trends and ability to tap into them.
  • Ability to exercise sound news judgment and follow KERA/NPR ethics and editorial standards.
  • A passion for public media and serving a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends, as needed andrequested.

BONUS IF YOU BRING:

  • Knowledge of North Texas people, cultures, issues and geography.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and/or other languages common in Texas

SALARY RANGE

This role includes unique responsibilities beyond traditional on-air hosting. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s individual experience and specialized skill set.

LOCATION:

We expect that this position will work out of our Dallas office at least 95% of the time.
