Summary

VA Maine HCS is seeking a full-time Hospitalist to work at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine.

Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards.

  • Primary duties include admission and management of inpatients, including ICU patients with general adult medical illnesses. This involves admitting patients, performing histories and physical examinations, rounding, writing progress notes, discharge planning, and discharge summaries.
  • Collaborate closely with specialists, emergency department, and primary care physicians to ensure continuous quality care for inpatients.
  • Coordinate with the Hospitalist PA(s) as necessary to deliver continuous quality care.
  • Manage patient transfers with the Boston VA and other hospitals when needed.
  • Provide Internal Medicine consultations to Mental Health and Surgical Services.
  • Maintain communication with the incoming evening Hospitalist/Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) regarding patient care issues through warm handoffs (sign-outs).
  • Participate in quality assurance programs, including performance measures such as ORYX, HEDIS, and SAIL, as well as chart reviews and medical record completion in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations.
  • Engage as a leader or active member on Medical Center committees and attend Medical Service Staff meetings.

M-F, 1630-0730; 0700-1730

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.

  • Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English required.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Complete online onboarding; provide acceptable identification documents. Effective May 7, 2025, non-REAL ID driver’s licenses or state IDs cannot be used as identification.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical exam.
  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion is acceptable for referral but not for hire until requirements are met. VA physicians who met initial standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Degree of MD or equivalent from an approved school.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license.
  • Residency training approved by VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in English.

Additional Requirements: Board Eligible or Board Certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.

Preferred Experience: 5 years as a Hospitalist.

Physical Requirements

Heavy lifting, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, visual and hearing capabilities as specified.

Education

MD or equivalent from an accredited institution; verification for foreign graduates through ECFMG if applicable.

Note: High professional attainment or expertise may justify appointment outside standard requirements in exceptional cases.
