Hospitalist Physician - Academics Job with UMass Memorial Medical Group in Worcester, MA

The Hospital at Home Program at UMass Memorial Health seeks a full-time Hospitalist Physician. Candidates should be board-certified/eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Both experienced physicians and graduating residents/fellows are encouraged to apply.

Position Summary:

The Virtual Home Hospitalist is a key member of the UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) Hospital at Home (HAH) team. Responsibilities include admitting, transferring, and caring for patients from UMMMC emergency departments and med/surg floors to the HAH program. After initial training at Worcester, the Hospitalist can work remotely within Massachusetts, provided they have a HIPAA-compliant private space, stable internet, and can travel to Worcester for training or urgent issues.

This role involves telehealth collaboration with nursing and paramedic teams to deliver inpatient-level care at home. Duties include clinical consultation, care planning, responding to patient needs, and maintaining high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide 12-hour virtual care shifts (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM), with emergency overnight coverage on 50% of active call nights (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM).
  • Collaborate with the patient acquisition team for referrals and perform "admission tuck-in" video visits for care planning and medication reconciliation.
  • Supervise and mentor residents and APPs; work closely with nursing, paramedic, and APP teams for coordinated care.
  • Work remotely after training in a HIPAA-compliant space, with occasional in-person duties at Worcester for meetings and educational events.
  • Contribute to care process improvements and participate in team meetings.
  • Participate in weekend (two per month) and holiday (two major and one minor per year) coverage.
  • Opportunity to serve as both Virtual and Brick-and-Mortar Hospitalist depending on service needs.
Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

  • MD or DO degree
  • MD or DO licensure in Massachusetts
  • BC/BE in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine

Experience/Skills:

  • Recent inpatient acute care experience
  • Comfort with telehealth or willingness to learn
  • Ability to partner with patients, families, and caregivers to develop and execute care plans
  • Experience with complex geriatric patients in low-control environments
  • Comfort with uncertainty, balancing risks of hospital and home care
  • Collaborative mindset and passion for small, dedicated care teams
  • Interest in managing a panel of acutely ill inpatients remotely and at home
