Job summary

Duke Regional Hospital seeks a Steam Plant Mechanic to operate and maintain high pressure boilers in the heating plant and low pressure boilers at linked facilities. The role includes engineering duties to support hospital operations and ensure reliable heating services.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, testing and treatment of boiler water, minor repairs, and coordination across shifts to keep systems safe and efficient at all times.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED.
• Two years of industrial or health care boiler operation and maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain plant log, gauge readings, fuel consumption and related data.
• Test boiler water and take corrective actions such as blowdown and treatment.
• Fire and rotate boilers in oil and gas, and start related equipment.
• Regulate and repair heating plant equipment including boilers, pumps, and fans.
• Perform minor repairs like replacing gaskets, tightening joints and repacking pumps.
• Start emergency generator during power failure and restore systems.
• Coordinate with preceding shift to discuss equipment conditions.
• Disassemble and clean boilers for annual insurance inspections.
• Perform preventative maintenance on boiler room equipment.
• Maintain general housekeeping in boiler room.
• Make rounds, log readings and take corrective actions.
• Perform minor plumbing repairs and electrical repairs as needed.
• Replace defective telephones, intercoms and nurse call paddles.
• Respond to fire alarms and take appropriate action.
• Operate transfer switches during power outages and restart essential equipment.
• Refer problems beyond capability to proper trades.
• Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
