Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a Security Officer to protect lives and property on hospital premises, patrol buildings and grounds, and respond to emergencies. You will de-escalate tense situations, report incidents, and maintain confidentiality while assisting staff, patients, and visitors.

The role requires 2–5 years in security or law enforcement, healthcare experience preferred, strong English communication, and the ability to work independently with basic computer skills.

Qualifications

  • Two to five (2-5) years of experience in law enforcement, security operations, or a related field is required. Health care setting experience preferred.
  • Use or possession of a firearm and/or other weapons is prohibited
  • Excellent knowledge of public safety and security procedures/protocols preferred
  • Ability to obtain state-required security officer credentials, as needed
  • Ability to perform duties independently
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic computer knowledge; experience with Microsoft Office preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to stay calm and competent in high-stress situations
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Participate in performance improvement activities

Responsibilities

  • Protects life and property of all persons on hospital premises. Deescalates all potentially tense situations and immediately contacts local police prior to any physical altercations.
  • Patrols hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism; reports suspicious activity; investigates accidents, incidents, and criminal acts.
  • Secures, locks, and protects hospital buildings and grounds.
  • Responds quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Assists staff in de-escalation and supports safety of staff.
  • Ensures only authorized persons are admitted onto hospital property; assists with inquiries from patients, visitors, or staff.
  • Maintains daily activity, incident, lost and found logs; documents accurately.
  • Serves on the emergency response team; responds to codes appropriately.
  • Reports safety and fire hazards; investigates incidents; communicates with supervisor.
  • Supports drills and education initiatives for safety and emergency management.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information; maintains good rapport with physicians, staff, and vendors.
  • May be required to remain on site during emergencies to ensure patient well-being and operations.
