Overall Responsibility
Staff Pharmacist oversees technicians while maintaining a high level of customer service. Duties include counseling patients on prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication, filling and checking prescriptions, and ordering and maintaining prescription drug stock. Communication with customers, doctors, and other pharmacy associates is a top priority.
Key tasks and responsibilities (essential functions)
- Assist in supervision of and participate in manufacturing, compounding, dispensing, bottling, packaging and labeling of drugs or solutions such as capsules, powders, suppositories, ointments, tablets, lotions, and emulsions.
- Input or supervise input of prescriptions and patient information into pharmacy computer system. Maintain and review patient profiles, screening for incompatibilities, interactions, appropriateness, and compliance.
- Ensure safe, accurate, and efficient dispensing of prescription and controlled drugs. Maintain records as required by law, including triplicate forms for Schedule II controlled substances.
- Provide accurate drug information to physicians, nurses, patients, and hospital personnel. Counsel patients on medication usage, storage, side effects, and indications.
- Consult with physicians regarding prescription inaccuracies, errors, interactions, allergies, substitutions, and refills.
- Order drugs and supplies, maintain stock levels, and keep required purchase invoices and order forms for controlled substances.
- Supervise inventory checks, pricing, storage, and data entry into pharmacy system. Facilitate prescription transfers between pharmacies.
- Maintain refrigerator temperature logs and manage medication stock for weekend hospital patients.
- Participate in continuing education to maintain licensure. Inspect storage areas and manage out-of-date medications and returns.
- Coordinate with vendors for shipping and billing issues, and set up new accounts as needed.
- Participate in hospital QA/PI activities. Report safety issues to the Pharmacy Director and provide reports for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
Required Experience
- Licensure and Certification: BCLS (certify within 90 days if not current), licensed and registered by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.
- Experience: Minimum of one year in hospital pharmacy preferred; three years preferred.
- Environment: Ability to work in a temperature-controlled environment, with physical capacity for standing, sitting, crouching, kneeling, walking, reaching, and lifting 30-50 pounds. Exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, and infectious disease is possible.
