Department: 10393 Enterprise Revenue Cycle - Coding & HIM Support Facility/HIM

Status: Full time

Hours Per Week: 40

Schedule Details/Additional Information: First Shift. This is a REMOTE Opportunity. Inpatient experience desired.

Major Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver education sessions within the coder education program, including onboarding and ongoing training. Coordinate training and orientation of new staff, lead sessions, and present high-level education on coding guidelines via PowerPoint and webinars.
  2. Work with Coding Training and Education Manager and Coding Production leadership to identify promotional and cross-training opportunities based on coder skill and performance.
  3. Assess coder comprehension, track and report education results, and develop follow-up educational plans. Collaborate with leadership to ensure focused education for coders.
  4. Develop and maintain educational tools/resources, including curricula, handbooks, presentations, and web-based programs.
  5. Research and communicate updates in coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS). Maintain knowledge of classifications and coding of diagnoses and procedures.
  6. Assist in updating the Advocate Aurora SharePoint website with current coding guidance and identify external continuing education opportunities.
  7. Participate in clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and DRG alignment processes, recommending educational topics based on chart reviews.
  8. Stay updated on AHRQ core measures, severity, and risk of mortality indicators affecting benchmarking and reimbursement.
  9. Attend and participate in coding quality team meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
  • Coding Specialist (CCS), RHIA, or RHIT credential from AHIMA.
Education Required:
  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or related field.
Experience Required:
  • Typically 5 years of hospital coding experience in a large healthcare system, including coding, denial review, and/or education functions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Leadership skills and knowledge of NCCI edits and coverage decisions.
  • Expertise in ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, G-codes, HCPCS, MS-DRGs, and workflow optimization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.
  • Excellent communication, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely, with a strong ethical sense.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Normal office environment, ability to sit for extended periods, and maintain concentration.
  • Travel may be required.
