Job summary

The Elizabeth Hospice is seeking an on-call physician to provide hospice and palliative care across the lifespan in San Diego and adjacent counties. The role includes on-call duties Monday through Sunday for a dedicated week, with duties covering admissions, symptom management, and documentation.

Must hold MD or DO licensure in California, DEA, NPI, and CPR/BLS; driving is required. Compensation is $1,500 per week with benefits and mileage reimbursement.

Responsibilities

  • Check medications, review diagnoses, and document in medical records.
  • Manage symptoms using best practices and coordinate with pharmacy when necessary.
  • Complete admissions and certification documentation promptly per Hospice policies and Medicare/Medi-Cal rules.
  • Maintain time sheets/records of activity and services per Hospice policies and regulations.
  • Provide on-call coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled, including telecommunication for admissions and emergencies.
  • Attend orientation and in-service trainings, including new process trainings by Hospice.
  • Document patient care services and all other treatment as directed by Hospice.

Description

The Elizabeth Hospice On‑call Physician provides quality hospice and palliative care to assigned patients across the lifespan—perinatal, pediatrics and adults—while consulting with the associate medical director and chief medical officer (CMO). Physicians are on‑call for one week, Monday through Sunday, and are responsible for carrying out the mission, vision, values, and commitment to quality of The Elizabeth Hospice.

To enhance the quality of life for those nearing the end of life's journey and for those who grieve.

Salary

$1,500.00 per week for Monday through Sunday coverage.

Work Schedule

On‑call Monday through Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 7:59 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday 24 hours.

Work Location

San Diego County and South Riverside County, CA.

Travel

Required for patient visits.

Responsibilities
  • Assist hospice personnel with the admission process, including evaluating referrals, certifying and documenting a patient’s terminal illness.
  • Check medications, review diagnoses, and document all in the medical record.
  • Manage symptoms using subspecialty best practices, relying on pocket memory cards and collaborating with pharmacy when necessary.
  • Complete all admission and certification‑related documentation promptly, as determined by Hospice.
  • Maintain time sheets or other records of activity and services provided in accordance with Hospice policies, prudent record‑keeping procedures, and applicable Medicare and Medi‑Cal regulations and program guidelines.
  • Provide on‑call coverage for evenings, weekends, and holidays for scheduled months as requested and assigned by Hospice, including availability through direct telecommunication for admissions, consultation, assistance with medical emergencies and patient referral.
  • Attend appropriate orientation and in‑service training programs, including training related to new processes developed by Hospice.
  • Document patient care services and all other treatment services as directed by Hospice.
Qualifications
  • Licensed as a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Licensed physician by the State of California.
  • DEA Certificate.
  • Valid National Provider Identification (NPI) number.
  • CPR/BLS certification.
  • Advanced Certification as Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse (ACHPN) preferred.
  • Current California driver’s license and proof of insurance.
