What you get to do:

  • Must work closely with landscape leadership and staff to provide proper care and maintenance of horticulture areas, including, pruning with a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment to perform plant care activities.
    Responsible for finding the latest methods available in cultivating, planting, and harvesting.
  • Assist in teaching different techniques and ornamentation methods.
  • Performs technical and manual tasks to care for and maintain topiaries, roses, rare and exotic plants and trees.
    Identifies abnormal plant conditions which may be caused by disease, insects or growing conditions and applies measures of control to correct.
  • Adheres to proper safety procedures and wears proper PPE at all times.
  • Performs other landscape, greenhouse and construction functions as required to maintain and develop landscape features on-site.
    Must be able to work in extreme heat, cold and damp temperatures; begin work in early morning hours, weekends and holidays.

What it takes to succeed:

  • Associate's Degree in horticulture, agronomy, forestry, or a closely related field; or two years of technical experience in horticulture, plant propagation, nursery, or greenhouse work, which includes plant pest and disease detection and control; or two years of college in one of the above specialties and one year of experience as described.
  • Must have a Horticulturalist Certification (can be obtained in VA through the Virginia Nursery & Landscaping Association).
  • Must have thorough knowledge of plants and how to maintain and manage them; as well as, experience in the fundamental principles of landscaping.
    Valid VA Driver's License required.

What else is important:

  • Able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Position engages in extensive walking and standing throughout entire work shift and climb/ascend heights, if needed
  • Perform the following physical activities: kneeling, squatting, bend floor-to waist/waist-to-overhead, reach overhead, simple grasp and fine hand manipulation tasks (use of tools/keyboard/writing)
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors, in varying weather, to include heat.
  • Work a flexible schedule/hours based on business need, to include opening, mid-, and closing shifts; nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Be flexible in work locations as placement will depend on business needs and career development opportunities

Compensation: $14.50 an hour
