DeKalb Alternative School is seeking a Social Studies Teacher who utilizes best practices to increase student achievement. The primary responsibility is to implement, deliver, and promote high academic expectations to all students. The ideal candidate must work collaboratively with team members and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Title: Teacher

Plan and deliver educational instruction to diverse learners, including those with special needs, in line with state and district standards. Create a safe, engaging learning environment that promotes academic success, physical fitness, and life skills for global citizenship. Work independently under moderate supervision, applying foundational knowledge effectively.

Essential Job Duties
  1. Teach grade-relevant, subject-specific, and mandated curriculum.
  2. Develop and implement lesson plans and activities through in-person and virtual learning, fulfilling district curriculum requirements and maintaining written evidence of preparation.
  3. Communicate via phone, email, or video conferencing with district personnel, students, and parents during regular hours.
  4. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development.
  5. Utilize internet and web-based technology for instruction and collaboration.
  6. Assess, document, and report on student achievement, performance, assessments, and attendance.
  7. Manage student behavior according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  8. Participate in conferences with parents, students, counselors, teachers, and administrators as required.
  9. Perform general instructional duties, including ordering materials and attending meetings and training.
  10. Supervise and manage paraprofessionals or instructional aides as needed.
  11. Maintain prompt and regular attendance.

Additional Requirements for Special Education Teachers:

  1. Identify educational needs and instruct students with varying exceptionalities.
  2. Follow IEPs, assess progress, and communicate with families as directed by regulations.
  3. Serve as case manager for students with disabilities, maintaining relevant paperwork and facilitating IEP meetings.
  4. Adhere to Georgia professional educator ethics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a Georgia-approved accredited college or university in relevant educational field.
  • Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission teaching certificate in the appropriate field.

Special Education Certification: Teachers issuing grades must hold appropriate certification in service areas such as Special Education, Adaptive Curriculum, or related fields, aligned with Georgia standards.

ESOL & Gifted Endorsements: Valid Georgia endorsements required.

CTAE Requirements: Minimum education based on specialization, passing GACE Ethics assessment, and verifiable industry experience or licensure.
