Job summary

Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems (SVCHS) seeks a compassionate Peer Recovery Specialist with lived recovery experience to mentor and support individuals with substance use disorders. You will collaborate with the New Day Recovery team to deliver integrated, community-based services.

The role emphasizes authentic peer relationships, crisis de-escalation, and documentation in the electronic health record, with travel between clinical locations and a pay range of $17.00–$23.00 per hour.

Qualifications

• Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or eligible per Virginia requirements.
• Personal lived experience in sustained recovery from SUD.
• Demonstrated ability to use lived experience to encourage and support others in recovery.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
• Basic computer skills and ability to document in an EHR.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a positive recovery mentor and role model, providing encouragement and practical support throughout the recovery journey.
• Foster authentic peer-to-peer relationships built on trust, empathy, and mutual respect.
• Supervise and maintain a safe, welcoming recovery-oriented environment.
• Facilitate individual and group peer recovery services and wellness programming.
• Assist patients in identifying strengths, goals, and barriers and support individualized recovery planning.
• Help individuals transition from professionally supported treatment to community-based recovery.
• Encourage self-advocacy and long-term recovery maintenance.
• Coordinate with the New Day Recovery team to deliver patient-centered services.
• Connect patients with community resources including housing, transportation, and mutual aid.
• Address social determinants of health through resource coordination and advocacy.
• Provide transportation to access recovery supports when needed.
• Support new referrals in engaging in treatment and recovery services.
• Accurately document all patient interactions in the EHR.
• Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
