Job summary

Washoe County Human Services Agency seeks Intermittent Hourly Homemaker Services Aide positions in Reno and surrounding areas. Work is on an as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours and no benefits. A valid driver’s license is required, and CPR/First Aid may be needed within three months depending on assignment.

TB tests and background checks are part of the process. Responsibilities include homemaker and personal care for homebound seniors, plus basic health screening as appropriate.

Qualifications

• One year of experience providing basic care to the elderly, disabled, or infirm.
• TB test may be required; background checks will be conducted.
• CPR and First Aid certification may be required within three months depending on assignment.

Under general supervision, provides a variety of homemaker, personal care, and basic health screening services for homebound senior citizens; and performs related work as required.

The Washoe County Human Services Agency is currently accepting applications for five Intermittent hourly Homemaker Services Aide positions. The intermittent hourly Homemaker Services Aide positions will work on an as needed basis with no guarantee of hours per week/month.

Current vacancies are located in Reno, with potential vacancies in Gerlach, Incline, Wadsworth and Washoe Valley.

Intermittent Hourly positions are not Benefited positions.

One year of experience providing basic care of the elderly, disabled, or infirm; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License or Certificates

• A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
• Healthcare CPR certification may be required within three months of appointment based on area of assignment and if required, must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
• Basic First Aid certification may be required within three months of appointment based on area of assignment and if required, must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

Additional Requirements

• Bending, reaching, kneeling, lifting (this may include personal care)
• Ability to be in homes with animals for a length of time (1-3 hours and may be in multiple homes in a day)
• Adaptable to varying temperatures inside homes
• Ability to identify when additional supports are needed to maintain the client in their home and report to the caseworker
• Understanding schedules are set for them, and lunch hours may vary depending on day to day schedules

Human Services Agency applicant(s) will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective October 1, 2026, the $40.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.

“Intermittent hourly employee” means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an “on-call” basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year. Intermittent Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775-687-4200 to check for yearly updates.
