Overview

The Home Medical Equipment (HME) Delivery Technician provides service to Mercyhealth at Home patients through delivery, assembly, and instruction on the safe use of home medical equipment. This position also performs follow-up visits for preventive maintenance, field repairs, equipment exchanges, and equipment pick-ups. After-hours on-call equipment delivery and problem solving are commonly required. Appropriate documentation is essential to ensure all company policies and regulatory requirements are met.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivers home medical equipment timely and efficiently to patients.
  • Instructs patients in the proper use of equipment per policy, using teach-back methods. Equipment ranges from simple aids like canes and walkers to advanced devices such as bilirubin lights, respiratory care equipment, and complex wheelchairs.
  • Reviews and explains all required documentation at each patient contact, obtaining signatures for consents, education/training forms, and proof of delivery as needed.
  • Addresses customer issues and questions, referring complex issues to management or appropriate departments.
  • Assesses the suitability of equipment based on the patient's ability and evaluates the home environment for safety.
  • Operates independently in an on-call role to resolve issues and deliver equipment.
  • Acts as a liaison with referral sources and internal/external customers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, maintains or repairs equipment, and documents all activities.
  • Inspects and cleans returned equipment per procedures.
  • Restocks inventory at multiple locations.
  • Maintains accurate records regarding equipment maintenance and delivery to meet accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Performs daily vehicle checks and ensures vehicle maintenance.
  • Loads and secures equipment appropriately for transit.
  • Verifies client information upon delivery to ensure accurate billing.
  • Completes delivery documentation promptly and accurately.
  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of Mercyhealth.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements to sustain licensure/certification as mandated.
Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent. 6 to 12 months experience in a customer service environment. HME experience is preferred.

Certification and Licensure

Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are required, with specifics depending on whether driving Mercyhealth vehicles or personal vehicles.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.
Physical Demands

Frequent exposure to weather conditions and driving up to 150 miles may be necessary. Work involves stressful, fast-paced environments with potential infection control hazards. Must be able to prioritize and multi-task.
