HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START

Through our Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we work with children (ages 0–5) and their families to provide the skills, confidence, and stable home life necessary for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond. Children also receive a broad array of health services including screenings and referrals, immunization schedule maintenance, nutrition assessments and follow-ups, mental health assessments as part of initial screenings, and evaluations for developmental or physical delays. Children receive health and dental services and have access to ongoing, routine, and acute health and dental care. Enrolled children receive healthy meals, with assessments of their nutritional needs and necessary follow-ups. Nutrition education is available for parents and incorporated into daily classroom activities for children.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Home Visitor/Teacher identifies, recruits, and enrolls families in the program. In classrooms, they support activities planned to help children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, with the overall goal of achieving social competence. While working in homes with families, the Home Visitor/Teacher fosters the view that parents are their child's first teachers and reinforces this concept with developmentally appropriate activities.

The responsibilities include:

  1. Working with home-based families by visiting the family home weekly to support developmentally appropriate, family-focused, and engaging activities;
  2. Providing children with an environment that includes varied activities to promote social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development;
  3. Supporting center-based classrooms as needed based on program requirements;
  4. Implementing the program curriculum for enrolled children, planning individual and group activities to stimulate learning, and working cooperatively with Co-Teacher and Family Advocate to provide information and resources to families;
  5. Creating a learning environment that reflects the diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the children and communities;
  6. Consulting with families and staff to identify challenges and explore solutions;
  7. Conducting ongoing observations, screenings, and assessments to develop individualized goals for each child's growth and development;
  8. Recruiting and enrolling families into the Head Start program;
  9. Maintaining children's records and submitting accurate monthly paperwork and reports;
  10. Planning and participating in developmentally appropriate socialization activities twice a month;
  11. Reinforcing the concept that parents are their child's first teachers and providing practical suggestions;
  12. Acting as a liaison and advocate between families, community resources, and the program to ensure parent involvement and access to health, nutrition, disability, and mental health services;
  13. Performing other duties as required to fulfill the program’s mission.

Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment, and education verifications;
  • Proof at the time of hire of:
    • TB clearance within the last 6 months;
    • Annual Influenza vaccination (between Aug 1 – Dec 1);
    • Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunizations;
  • Health screening at employment start;
  • Ability to interact with children in a busy environment, including:
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.;
  • Frequent kneeling and squatting;
  • Moving quickly when necessary.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field;
  • 24 Child Development (CD) units, including at least 6 units of infant/toddler care (at least 3 semester units required at hire, with the remaining 3 units to be completed within 1 year of hire).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with infants and toddlers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of experience in ECE or social work;
  • Child Development Teacher Permit;
  • Knowledge of Head Start performance standards;
  • Familiarity with Growing Great Kids curriculum.
