Job Description

The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) is a non-exempt employee, trained to provide personal care and services to hospice patients to augment care given by family members or other caregivers. Salary Range: $17 - $21 / Hour

Assigned Job Responsibilities
  • Performs only those personal care activities contained in a written assignment. Home Health Aide (HHA) assignments may include:
  • Helps the patient maintain good personal hygiene.
  • Plans and prepares meals; assists with feeding if needed.
  • Assists the patient with ambulation.
  • Assists with treatments ordered by the physician and supervised by the nurse, including: colostomy care, use of walker or wheelchair, dressing reinforcement, range of motion exercises, ice cap or collar, measuring intake/output, medication assistance.
  • Reads and records temperature, pulse, and respiration.
Other Responsibilities
  • Maintains a safe and healthy environment.
  • Promotes mental alertness through activities.
  • Provides emotional and psychological support.
  • Reports changes in patient condition or home situation.
  • Teaches basic personal care to caregivers.
  • Practices infection control measures.
  • Documents patient status and care activities.
  • Completes at least 12 hours of in-service training per year.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
What the HHA May Not Do
  • Be assigned to institutional settings.
  • Change sterile dressings or irrigate body cavities.
  • Perform gastric lavage, catheterization, or administer medications.
  • Care for tracheotomy tubes or suction patients.
  • Provide unassigned personal care.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Meets personnel qualifications as per 42 C.F.R. Sections 484.4 and 484.36.
  • 75 hours of training documented as per 42 C.F.R. Sections 484.36(a)(1).
  • Successfully completed a competency evaluation program per 42 C.F.R. Section 484.36(b).

CA: CHHA

CT: Homemaker-Home Health Aide

IL: HHA, NA

KS: Home Health Aide certificate

MO: Home Health Aide

NJ: Homemaker-Home Health Aide

OH: Home Health Aide

Additional Requirements
  • Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Having a telephone at home.
Physical Demands

Assist in lifting/transferring patients, lift objects over 20 pounds, stand/walk over an hour, and other physical activities. Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision and focus adjustment. Sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching may be required.

Reporting Structure
  • Reports directly to the VITAS Nurse.
  • Receives clinical direction from the VITAS Nurse.
