Job summary

Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center in Janesville, WI seeks a Hockey Program Manager to lead leagues, camps, Learn-to-Play, and teams, while supervising instructors and scorekeepers. This role collaborates with outside event owners, league officials, and leaders to deliver a first-class programming experience for participants, coaches, officials, and spectators.

You will work closely with marketing to expand programming, manage budgets and registrations, and schedule events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation or sports management preferred.
  • Experience in customer service and programming administration.
  • 5+ years in hockey industry.
  • Proven track record developing, marketing, and selling recreational programs.
  • Experience in programming setup & execution operations.
  • Knowledge of recreational/facility management software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving negotiating skills.
  • Must be a team player with excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Flexible work schedule (nights, weekends, holidays, long hours).
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee recruitment and training of hockey coaches; actively recruit players and teams.

  • Schedule league play and post-season; ensure fair and competitive play.
  • Coordinate with Skate Program Manager for ice time scheduling.
  • Maintain clean, safe environment for guests and team members.
  • Develop programming targeting various markets; maximize utilization and community impact.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to support campaigns.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Hockey Program Manager is responsible for developing and managing the entire scope of hockey related activities, such as leagues, events, Learn-to-Play, hockey camps/clinics, teams, as well as supervising hockey instructors and scorekeepers. This position is responsible for creating a first-class programming experience for all participants, coaches, officials, and spectators across all our offerings. This role will work closely with outside event owners, league officials, and other leaders to successfully accomplish these responsibilities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Directly align with the SFM Statement and Core Values
  • Develop and execute all aspects of hockey programming; provide effective training, workflow structure, and leadership for hockey programming
  • Oversee the recruitment and training of hockey coaches; actively recruit new players and teams
  • Develop and effectively manage program budgets and maintain registration goals; effectively manage all aspects of the program/camp registration process; create efficient purchasing/registration experience for all programming customers
  • Execute all program league and post-season play scheduling; create a fair and competitive playing experience for all participants
  • Coordinate with Skate Program Manager for scheduling ice time and programs
  • Build relationships and communicate effectively with guests; ensure teams and guests keep locker room neat and clean
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for guests and team members
  • Continuously develop programming that targets various markets ranging from corporate, group, adult, youth, family, and special interest groups; maximizing utilization and positive impact within the community
  • Effectively collaborate with the Marketing Team to support their programming/camp campaign efforts
  • Serve as MOD as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned by management
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in recreation or sports management or related field is preferred
  • Experience and success in customer service and programming administration preferred
  • 5+ years in the hockey industry required
  • Must have proven track record of developing, marketing, and selling recreational programs
  • Must have experience in programming setup & execution operations
  • Must have knowledge of recreational/facility management software programs
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving negotiating skills
  • Must be a team player
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (e.g., nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours)
  • Must possess current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or must be willing to obtain them within 90 days of hire
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds waist high
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time whether indoors or outdoors, and squat, stoop or bend
  • Will be required to work in cold environments for extended periods of time
