JOB DESCRIPTION
A Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic for an aggregate or quarry operation is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining large off-road fleets and crushing/screening plants. Their primary goal is to maximize equipment uptime, ensure regulatory compliance, and support continuous material production in demanding outdoor environments.
Job Summary
A Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic for an aggregate or quarry operation is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining large off-road fleets and crushing/screening plants. Their primary goal is to maximize equipment uptime, ensure regulatory compliance, and support continuous material production in demanding outdoor environments.
Essential Functions
- Individual is primarily responsible for maintaining stationary production equipment in an aggregate plant setting including but not limited to conveyors, crushers, shakers, elevators, drives, and screws. Inspects and documents condition of machinery for items needing repair or service.
- Ability to identify signs of equipment malfunction, understand and report them to the maintenance team.
- Replacing or repairing defective parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment.
- Rebuilding or fabricating parts.
- Reading technical manuals: and may order parts from central services or outside suppliers.
- May drive pick-up or service truck in the plant and to pick-up parts.
- Operate loaders to mine and load aggregates for processing, feed the plant(s) and load finished material onto haul trucks.
- Performs thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and accurately completes daily mobile equipment reports.
- Perform duties safely, responsibly and proficiently while observing all safety, health and environmental rules and practices; follow established traffic patterns avoiding hazards; promptly reports any unsafe conditions; maintains good housekeeping practices on equipment and in the plant.
- Observe the plant and report any necessary maintenance or adjustments that may be required; and visually checks material being produced for compliance with specifications.

Responsibilities
Education
- High School diploma or its equivalent is required.
Experience
- Must possess a minimum of three years repair/maintenance experience and a minimum of two years in operating loaders (980, 988, etc.) in a sand and gravel plant is required.
- Required solid knowledge and understanding of the capabilities of the equipment as well as specifications of different finished materials.
- Previous experience operating support equipment including but not limited to man lifts, skid steers, etc. is required.
- Requires a basic knowledge of specifications of different finished materials, the ability to recognize various products by sight, understand proper plant operation as well as capabilities of equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Must be able to cut, weld and fabricate; climb ladders; lift plant components up to 50 pounds, work at heights of up to 50-feet; and move in a variety of body positions.
- Must be skilled in safely and efficiently operating various types of mobile equipment, including but not limited to loaders, forklifts and man lifts.
- Must have the mechanical ability to diagnose sources of trouble and use various hand tools, power tools, and machinery such as grinders, presses, cranes, and jacks to complete repairs.
- Must have the ability to climb ladders and operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner; have knowledge and understanding of OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations; perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner; and possess hazard recognition skills.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required.
- Previous experience reading technical manuals and understand schematic diagrams is preferred.
Other Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Must have personal hand tools up to 1 ½” in size, cutting head, tip and welding gloves.
- Must be punctual and dependable, initiate and take action before being required to do so, and use time efficiently.
- Must be safety conscious and respond to inquiries promptly and follow through to ensure the situation is taken care of correctly.
- Must be able to work in all types of weather and environments.
