Job Title: HLA Serology Technologist (Entry - Senior Level)


Position: #00828819 - Requisition: #35457


















































Job Summary:



This position performs clinical laboratory testing to determine ABO and MHC compatibility of transplant recipients and donors which includes HLA antibody screening and crossmatching. Adheres to standards of external regulatory bodies including ABHI, CAP, and CLIA. Understands principles of histocompatibility and immunogenetics. Prepares reagents while adhering to strict quality control guidelines; performs and documents instrument function checks and preventive maintenance. Works independently and with others; readily adapts to changes in work environment; performs multiple tasks simultaneously. Communicates effectively with others. Participates in on-call activities and continuing education; demonstrates initiative in accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Accessions samples into database, verifies acceptability of specimens for testing, and ensures appropriate requisition accompanies each sample for testing.

  • Understands principles and procedures of clinical histocompatibility testing which includes ABO red cell typing, HLA panel reactive antibody (PRA) procedure and protocol for screening of patient sera, class I and II crossmatches on recipient/donor pairs according to written protocol.

  • Records results accurately and concisely communicates them as needed to transplant personnel.

  • Actively participates in quality assurance program which includes performing assays according to established protocols, follows safety guidelines, uses universal precautions, and notifies Supervisor and/or Director of assay or equipment malfunctions, which compromise test quality.

  • Performs additional tasks as requested by Supervisor and/or Director.

  • Organizes workload for maximum efficiency; assists co-workers and performs their duties when daily work is completed; contributes to a positive working environment; maintains a clean and safe working environment.

Entry Level:



  • A bachelor's degree in biological science or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.




Intermediate Level:



  • A bachelor's degree in biological science or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.



  • One (1) year of professional level experience in an accredited HLA Laboratory.


Senior Level:



  • A bachelor's degree in biological science or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.



  • Two (2) years of professional level experience in an accredited HLA Laboratory.


*Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in science or health related field.

  • Clinical research or related experience.

  • Three (3) years of experience in an accredited HLA Laboratory.

  • Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g., EMR or HER and data management systems).

  • Certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or ABHI Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) or certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, MT(ASCP).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Outstanding customer service skills.

  • Knowledge and understanding of federal regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:


Entry Level: $56,555 - $71,939


Intermediate Level: $61,546 - $78,286


Senior Level: $66,536 - $84,634


The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
