**Histotechnologist positions are available in levels 1, 2, or 3 depending on experience and education**

General Description:
Under general direction, performs routine and advanced professional and technical work in preparing human tissues for microscopic examination and interpretation. May require working with infectious agents.
Essential Responsibilities:

- Receive and accession specimens into laboratory LIS system.
- Complies with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures including the appropriate use of PPE.
- Embeds paraffin infiltrated specimens according to specimen type.
- Sections paraffin embedded tissue at various thicknesses according to department protocols.
- Embeds fresh tissue in a water-based medium for frozen section.
- Process, cuts, and stains frozen tissues for rapid diagnosis during surgical procedures.
- Performs routine staining procedures (Hand H&E and special stains).
- Prepares solutions for routine and special stains.
- Performs appropriate QC and evaluates the quality of each stain.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Participates in laboratory quality activities including quality monitoring and auditing, occurrence/deviation documentation, and performance improvement.
- Assesses and verifies patient results after troubleshooting issues.
- Participates in inventory management.
- Maintains legible and organized records and work areas free of debris.
- Maintains accurate block and slide control records.
- Assumes responsibility for own professional development.
- Completes annual competency assessment.
- Responsible for receiving, processing, and distributing specimens. Recognizes issues with orders that may compromise patient test results.
- Specimen transport.
- Enters patient information and test orders into Electronic Health Record.
- Operates laboratory equipment such as scales, centrifuges, processors, and stainers.
- Performs and documents proper maintenance of instrumentation and equipment following all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Performs miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering the telephone, filing, and preparing records for filing.
- May train to assist in FNA procedures with the Pathologist present.
- Excellent knowledge of computer data entry and keyboard skills related to electronic medical records.
- Maintains a clean and organized workstation.
- Takes call as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities of Level 2:
- Loads and operates tissue processors.
- Performs processor fluid changes.
- Troubleshoots sectioning and staining issues.
Additional Responsibilities of Level 3:
- Performs all routine and complex functions in the Histology laboratory.
- Responsible for daily workflow in the laboratory during off-shift hours or in the absence of the supervisor.
- Ensures compliance with all safety policies including PPE use.
- Assists in gross dissection of tissue.
- Performs proficiency testing per laboratory and regulatory standards.
- May submit PT testing to regulatory agencies.
- Creates staff bench assignments.
- Acts as a mentor and preceptor for laboratory personnel and students.
- Provides quality feedback to staff.
- Participates in development and validation of new tests.
- Prepares technical procedures for the laboratory.
- Recognizes issues with orders that may compromise patient test results.
- Handles specimen transport.
- Enters patient info and test orders into Electronic Health Record.
- Operates laboratory equipment and performs maintenance following safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Level 1:
Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience: 0-3 years in a laboratory setting preferred.
Licensure/Certifications/Registrations: None required.
Level 2:
Education: Associate's Degree, or 60 hours of coursework with science courses, or successful completion of NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program.
Experience: 3-5 years relevant experience.
Certifications: Certification through ASCP, AMT, or other recognized body required.
Level 3:
Education: MLT or Bachelor's Degree with specified coursework.
Experience: 5+ years in hematopathology with progressive responsibilities.
Certifications: Recognized national certification required.
