  • $10K Sign-on bonus. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a 2nd or 3rd shift Histotechnologist III in the Immunohistochemistry Lab to join their team:

Summary:

The Histotechnologist III is employed in a clinical laboratory setting and is responsible for performing procedures according to established and approved protocols, requiring independent judgment and interpretation. The role includes routine histotechnology, special stains, instrument maintenance, and quality control standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs technical procedures resulting in microscopic slide preparations, including tissue processing, decalcification, embedding, microtomy, staining, frozen sections, and special specimen preparations.
  • Evaluates, prepares, and maintains procedures to ensure timely and consistent lab output; investigates and develops new procedures; operates and maintains instrumentation; manages records and documentation.
  • Recognizes and recommends quality improvement areas; assists in managing related records, reports, and procedure modifications.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills for team leadership; may assume management responsibilities including training and evaluating new employees.
  • Maintains confidentiality of laboratory work and findings; ensures adequate staffing on all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Maintains documentation for procedures, specimen information, and instrumentation performance; develops policies and procedures.
  • Manages inventory and supplies; utilizes computer applications for data entry, record keeping, and reporting; communicates effectively; adapts to changing environments.
  • Assesses and develops work systems to optimize lab performance; ensures staffing adequacy across shifts.

Credentials:

  • Certification by a standards exam such as the ASCP HTL or equivalent (Required)
  • Current HTL ASCP certification preferred; hired as Histotechnologist II if certified.

Education or Experience:

  • Associate degree in Histotechnology or related biological/chemical science (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least 7 years of experience (Required)
  • Qualified to perform high-complexity testing per CLIA (Preferred)
