Job summary

Tempus is seeking a Histology Technician to prepare unstained and stained slides, ensuring correct orientation and accurate labeling. You will cut frozen sections, stain for pathologists, and collaborate with in-house pathologists for slide quality.

The role requires ASCP HT/HTL certification and a college degree, with strong safety practices and organizational skills. The successful candidate will work with the Histology team to meet daily deadlines in a dynamic, regulated laboratory

Responsibilities

• Prepare unstained and routine H&E slides using microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper, tissue processors, and embedding centers.
• Determine block orientation and knife angles to obtain representative sections.
• Maintain specimen integrity and proper identification of samples, slides and folders.
• Cut frozen sections using a cryostat and stain samples for pathologists to review.
• Collaborate with in-house pathologists and pathology lab coordinators for slide quality review.
• Track work completed using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Maintain laboratory equipment and perform routine maintenance; troubleshoot when necessary.
• Follow safety requirements of the laboratory and maintain a safe work environment.
• Develop and adjust SOPs to capture workflow improvements.
• Reliably produce quality finished products.
• Work with Histology team to meet daily cutting and staining deadlines.
• Communicate workflow needs to pathologists and other teams.
• Notify lead/supervisor/manager of problems and record issues in the incident management system.
• Report issues with instrumentation, samples, or the lab.

• Preparation of both unstained and routine hematoxylin and eosin stained slides from formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks using: a microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper, tissue processors, and embedding centers
• Determine appropriate block orientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representative sections
• Maintain specimen integrity through proper identification of samples, slides and folders
• Cut frozen sections using a cryostat, stain samples for pathologists to review
• Collaborate with in-house pathologists and pathology lab coordinators for slide quality review
• Track work completed using a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Maintain laboratory equipment and record maintenance regularly, authorized to troubleshoot when necessary
• Approach work with safety and diligence and follow safety requirements of the laboratory
• Perform routine workflows without direct guidance, evaluate workflows and make adjustments to SOPs to capture those processes
• Reliably produce quality finished products
• Work collaboratively with other members of the Histology team to accomplish daily cutting and staining deadlines
• Communicate effectively with pathologists, members of the histology team, and other associated teams as relates to workflow needs
• Notifies the lead, supervisor, and/or manager when problems or mistakes arise and may implement fixes with authorization and under direction, records issues in the incident management system
• Report issues with instrumentation, samples, or the lab itself in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

• ASCP HT or HTL required
• College degree required - associates or bachelors degrees
