Job summary

Tempus, a company advancing precision medicine, seeks a Histology Lab Technician to prepare H&E slides from FFPE tissue and operate core histology equipment. You will work with pathologists to ensure slide quality and participate in team-driven daily deadlines.

The role requires histology experience and familiarity with SOPs, CAP regulations, and lab safety, with a focus on accurate sample handling and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare unstained and H&E-stained slides from FFPE tissue blocks.
• Operate microtome, water bath, stainers, coverslipper, processors, and embedding centers.
• Determine block orientation and knife angles for representative sections.
• Maintain specimen identity and proper filing of slides and folders.
• Cut frozen sections with cryostat and stain for pathologists.
• Collaborate with pathologists and lab coordinators for quality review.
• Track work in LIMS and document progress.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; perform maintenance logs.
• Follow safety requirements and conduct routine workflows independently.
• Deliver high-quality finished products on schedule.
• Coordinate with histology team to meet daily cutting and staining deadlines.
• Communicate workflow needs with pathologists and team members.
• Escalate issues to lead/supervisor/manager as needed.

What You’ll Do:

• Preparation of both unstained and routine hematoxylin and eosin stained slides from formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks
• Utilize microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper , tissue processors, and embedding centers
• Determine appropriate block orientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representative sections
• Maintain specimen integrity through proper identification of samples, slides and folders
• Cut frozen sections using a cryostat, stain samples for pathologists to review
• Collaborate with in-house pathologists and pathology lab coordinators for slide quality review
• Track work completed using a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Maintain laboratory equipment and record maintenance regularly
• Approach work with safety and diligence and follow safety requirements of the laboratory
• Perform routine workflows without direct guidance
• Reliably produce quality finished products
• Work collaboratively with other members of the Histology team to accomplish daily cutting and staining deadlines
• Communicate effectively with pathologists, members of the histology team, and other associated teams as relates to workflow needs
• Seek assistance from the lead, supervisor, and/or manager when problems or mistakes arise
• Report issues with instrumentation, samples, or the lab itself in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification not required
• Associates preferred
• Previous histology experience required
• Laboratory Knowledge of CAP regulations
• Experience with pathology laboratory SOPs and protocols
• Comfort with laboratory safety and training
• Demonstrates problem solving skills in the laboratory
• Good communication and organization skills

Illinois Pay: $33.75/hour The expected salary range may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience.
