Job summary

Tempus AI is seeking an experienced histology technician in Illinois to join our lab team. You will prepare unstained and H&E stained slides from FFPE blocks, operate microtome and staining equipment, and ensure accurate specimen handling.

You will work with pathologists and the histology team to meet daily cutting and staining deadlines. Ideal candidates have prior histology experience; an associate degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare unstained and H&E stained slides from FFPE tissue blocks.
• Operate microtome, water bath, stainer, coverslipper, tissue processors, and embedding centers.
• Determine block orientation and knife angles to obtain representative sections.
• Maintain specimen integrity and proper labeling of samples and slides.
• Cut frozen sections using a cryostat and stain for pathologists to review.
• Collaborate with pathologists and lab coordinators to review slide quality.
• Track work in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; ensure safety compliance.
• Communicate workflow needs to pathologists and histology team.

What You’ll Do:

• Preparation of both unstained and routine hematoxylin and eosin stained slides from formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks
• Utilize microtome, water bath, automated stainer, automated coverslipper , tissue processors, and embedding centers
• Determine appropriate block orientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representative sections
• Maintain specimen integrity through proper identification of samples, slides and folders
• Cut frozen sections using a cryostat, stain samples for pathologists to review
• Collaborate with in-house pathologists and pathology lab coordinators for slide quality review
• Track work completed using a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Maintain laboratory equipment and record maintenance regularly
• Approach work with safety and diligence and follow safety requirements of the laboratory
• Perform routine workflows without direct guidance
• Reliably produce quality finished products
• Work collaboratively with other members of the Histology team to accomplish daily cutting and staining deadlines
• Communicate effectively with pathologists, members of the histology team, and other associated teams as relates to workflow needs
• Seek assistance from the lead, supervisor, and/or manager when problems or mistakes arise
• Report issues with instrumentation, samples, or the lab itself in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

Illinois Pay: $33.75/hour
