Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform tissue embedding, microtomy, routine H&E staining, special stains, and IHC.
• Process and evaluate surgical pathology, cytology, and autopsy specimens.
• Cut paraffin blocks at 5-6 microns with a microtome; maintain productivity.
• Embed specimens with high-quality block creation; target ~30 blocks/hour.
• Conduct QC on reagents, stains, tissue preps and equipment.
• Operate and maintain histology equipment; troubleshoot as needed.
• Use LIS for tracking, data entry, and documentation; monitor equipment.
• Prepare tissue processors for overnight processing and monitor performance.
• Handle infectious specimens and chemicals per Universal Precautions.
• Maintain records and ensure regulatory/QA compliance.

Overview

Histotechnologist (HT) / Histology Technician Alternate Titles: Histotechnician, Histology Technologist, Histology Laboratory Technician, HT (ASCP)

Johns Hopkins Intrastaff is seeking a detail-oriented Histotechnologist to perform routine and advanced histology procedures that support accurate pathological diagnosis and patient care. This role is responsible for processing tissue specimens, performing microtomy and staining procedures, maintaining laboratory quality standards, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality slides for diagnostic evaluation.

The Histotechnologist will support pathology and laboratory operations within Johns Hopkins Health System. This position works closely with pathologists, laboratory leadership, cytotechnologists, medical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate specimen preparation and timely diagnostic results.

Success in this role includes:

• Producing high-quality tissue sections and slides within established productivity standards.
• Maintaining compliance with laboratory quality control and safety requirements.
• Supporting efficient turnaround times for surgical, cytology, and autopsy specimens.

Responsibilities

• Perform tissue embedding, microtomy, routine H&E staining, special staining, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures.
• Prepare, process, and evaluate surgical pathology, cytology, and autopsy specimens.
• Cut paraffin tissue blocks at 5-6 microns using a microtome while maintaining quality and productivity standards.
• Embed surgical and cytology specimens into paraffin blocks with an expected productivity of approximately 30 blocks per hour.
• Perform quality control checks on reagents, chemicals, staining processes, tissue preparations, and laboratory equipment.
• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain histology equipment, including tissue processors, microtomes, embedding stations, and staining instruments.
• Utilize laboratory information systems (LIS) and computer applications for specimen tracking, data entry, billing, and documentation.
• Prepare tissue processors for overnight processing and monitor equipment performance.
• Handle infectious specimens and hazardous chemicals while adhering to Universal Precautions and laboratory safety standards.
• Maintain accurate records and comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and quality assurance requirements.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Must-Have)

• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or a related life science field

OR

• Completion of at least 90 semester hours of college coursework meeting federal clinical laboratory personnel qualification standards.

• Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures including tissue processing, embedding, and microtomy.

• Ability to work safely with biological specimens and laboratory chemicals.

• Proficiency with laboratory computer systems and data entry.

• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain quality standards in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Certifications / Licenses:

Required

• None required if minimum educational qualifications are met.

Preferred

• HT (ASCP) Certification
• Employees hired before 2016 may be considered under applicable grandfathering provisions with an Associate's degree in a science-related field and a minimum of five years of relevant histology experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

• HT (ASCP) certification.
• One or more years of histology laboratory experience.
• Experience performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining.
• Experience working in a hospital, academic medical center, or pathology laboratory.
• Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).
• Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, and laboratory quality assurance standards.
• Experience with troubleshooting and maintenance of histology instrumentation.
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
