Job summary

Geisinger Medical Center is seeking a Histotechnologist for night shift to process tissue specimens, perform embedding, microtomy, and staining for diagnostic pathology.

Qualifications include HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) and 1 year of lab experience; ASCP certification is preferred. Benefits and on-site orientation are provided.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year laboratory experience (Preferred).
  • Certified Histotechnician — ASCP.
  • Associate’s Degree or higher if applicable (Preferred).

  • Processes and prepares tissue specimens for examination by Pathologists.
  • Fixates tissues on processing equipment or by manual methods for proper examination.
  • Identifies tissue orientation and embeds specimens in paraffin for sectioning.
  • Performs microtomy to render quality sections for diagnoses.
  • Produces consistently good quality microscopic slides for review by Pathologist.
  • Performs routine and special staining procedures as required for diagnostic examination.
  • Maintains equipment and participates in preventive maintenance programs.
  • Assists in handling and storage of supplies and notifies when inventory is low.
  • Participates in quality improvement and patient specimen identification measures.
  • Assists in evaluation of new instruments and technologies as needed.
  • Participates in competency assessments and LIS system changes.
  • Participates in training and orientation of new employees.

Job Summary

Location: Geisinger Medical Center (GMC). Shift: Nights. Scheduled weekly hours: 40. Worker type: Regular. Exemption status: No.

Responsibilities
  • Processes and prepares tissue specimens for examination by Pathologists.
  • Processes tissues on processing equipment or by manual methods to ensure proper fixation for examination.
  • Identifies and determines proper orientation of tissue specimens and embeds specimens in paraffin to ensure proper alignment for sectioning.
  • Performs microtomy at proper micron to render quality sections for diagnoses.
  • Produces consistently good quality microscopic slides that can be readily reviewed and interpreted by the Pathologist.
  • Performs routine and special staining procedures as required to distinguish cells and organisms for diagnostic examination.
  • Maintains equipment, participates in established preventive maintenance program, and alerts Analytical Specialist of any equipment problems.
  • Assists in proper handling and storage of supplies, notifies Analytical Specialist when inventory is low.
  • Assists with department's quality improvement program through active participation in patient specimen identification and quality tracking measures.
  • Assists in the evaluation and validation of new instruments and new technologies as needed.
  • Participation in completion of assigned initial and subsequent competency assessment examinations required and maintains working knowledge of applicable Laboratory Information System programs and system changes.
  • Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
Position Details
  • Education: HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP). Recent graduates encouraged.
  • Full time schedule: 11p-7:30am with no weekends or holidays.
  • Qualifies for off‑shift differentials and incentives.
  • Sign‑on bonus: $12,500 for qualified applicants.
  • Anatomic Pathology Scholars Program: New graduates or less than 3 years of experience; up to $21,000 in support with a five‑year work commitment.
