Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), Days shift, 40 scheduled weekly hours, regular, non‑exempt.

Job Summary

Join our team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories. The role involves screening a wide variety of cytologic preparations and supporting laboratory operations.

Job Duties
  • Screen gynecological and non‑gynecological cytologic preparations to identify abnormalities and assist the pathologist with diagnosis.
  • Accurately screen various cytologic samples, identify abnormal or malignant findings, and exercise clinical judgment based on departmental criteria.
  • Sign off negative gynecologic specimen reports and pass yearly Pap proficiency testing.
  • Assist in fine‑needle aspiration procedures: advise clinicians on specimen collection, perform rapid staining, and assess adequacy.
  • Obtain patient history and clinical information; request additional specimens when indicated.
  • Follow departmental quality‑assurance procedures and take remedial actions when deviations from performance specifications occur.
  • Prepare and process certain specimens in the Cytopreparatory lab, remaining familiar with cytopreparatory techniques.
  • Participate in record‑keeping: work volumes, safety records, continuing education, and quality‑assurance activities.
  • Maintain equipment, participate in preventive maintenance, and alert the Analytical Specialist to any problems.
  • Handle and store supplies properly; notify the Analytical Specialist when inventory is low.
  • Assist in the evaluation and validation of new instruments and technologies under the supervision of the Analytical Specialist and Doctoral Director.
  • Complete competency assessment examinations and keep current knowledge of laboratory information system programs.
  • Train and orient new employees.
  • Perform all duties in a clinical environment while complying with all organization policies and procedures.
Position Details

The cytopathology services process more than 35,000 cytology cases per year, including approximately 12,000 non‑gynecologic cases. The position offers exposure to a large system, academic training, and various departmental projects.

Education and Credentials

Must possess a valid ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) credential.

Sign‑On Bonus & Programs
  • $12,500 sign‑on bonus for qualified candidates.
  • Anatomic Pathology Scholars Program: new graduate or less than 3 years of experience, up to $50,000 in financial support with a five‑year work commitment.
