Job summary

Florida Digestive Health Specialists is seeking a skilled Histotechnologist to join the FDHS Pathology Lab in Tampa. You will prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, embed tissue in paraffin, perform microtomy, and stain slides using H&E and special stains while ensuring quality control and CLIA compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists following policies and procedures.
  • Capable of performing all duties of a Histotechnician.
  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of tissue samples; process accompanying paperwork.
  • Embed processed tissue in paraffin and perform microtomy.
  • Prepare slides for H&E staining and coverslipping (manual or automated).
  • Perform all special stain procedures and assist with IHC as needed.
  • Maintain equipment and document quality control; train Histotechnicians and lab aides.

Job description

Histotechnologist

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Histotechnologist to join our FDHS Pathology Lab. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination, performing routine and specialized histologic procedures, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and accuracy. This role is crucial in supporting pathologists in diagnosing diseases and conditions based on tissue samples.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures
  • Capable of performing all of the duties/responsibilities of a Histotechnician
  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples
  • Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting
  • Embed processed tissue in paraffin
  • Perform microtomy of embedded tissue
  • Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining
  • Perform coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for special stain procedures
  • Obtain and validate tissue used in special stains
  • Perform all special stain procedures
  • May prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures
  • May obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures
  • May perform IHC testing
  • Perform filing of finished blocks and slides
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures
  • Provide training and guidance to Histotechnicians, students and lab aides
  • Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities
  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met
  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, and CLIA regulations
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs. The employee should be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs. The work environment is typically quiet to moderate with standard office noise levels. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to sounds such as ringing phones, office equipment, and conversations among colleagues.
