Job summary

UCHealth in Longmont is seeking a Histotechnologist to prepare slides using H&E, immunohistochemical, and histochemical stains for pathologists. This is an onsite, PRN daytime role with pay per hour range based on experience, $29.54–$44.31 hourly.

Responsibilities include embedding, sectioning, and freezing tissue for rapid intraoperative diagnoses, performing special stains, and titrating antibodies. The role requires HT/HTL certification (post-2004 or equivalent) and ASCP certification within

  • HT/HTL certification after Jan 1, 2004 required.
  • HT/HTL certification prior to 2004 acceptable with high school diploma/GED.
  • ASCP HT/HTL certification within 6 months of hire required.

  • Embeds and sections processed tissue sections to produce slides for diagnosis; sections frozen tissue for rapid intraoperative diagnosis.
  • Performs special staining techniques for interstitial elements and antigens for prognosis.
  • Conducts research and titrations of new antibodies used as diagnostic tools; serves as consultant to lab and clinical staff.
  • Maintains work area and embedding/sectioning equipment; maintains processing equipment and stainers.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.

Education

NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program OR 60 sem hrs biology & chemistry + 1 year histopathology experience
Baccalaureate degree + 30 sem hrs biology & chemistry + HT/HTL program or 1 year histopathology experience
ASCP HT/HTL certification within 6 months of hire

Pay: $29.54 - $44.31 / hour. Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience

This position is an onsite role and does not offer a hybrid or remote option

Summary:

Provides high quality routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, immunohistochemically and histochemically stained slides to pathologist for routine or complex diagnosis and prognostic markers.

Responsibilities:
  • Embeds and sections processed tissue sections to produce slides for diagnosis. Sections frozen tissue to produce slides for quick diagnosis during surgical procedures.

  • Performs special staining techniques for interstitial elements of tissue sections to include micro-organisms and various cellular components including antigens and enzymes for complex diagnosis and prognostic markers.

  • Conducts research and titrations of new antibodies used as diagnostic tools for diagnosis and prognosis. Serves as a consultant to laboratory staff and other clinical staff as needed.

  • Maintains immediate work area and equipment used for embedding and sectioning specimens. Maintains processing equipment, stainers and solutions used in processes.

  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.

Requirements:
  • HT/HTL certification received after January 1st, 2004: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program; or 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry combined with one year full time acceptable experience in histopathology; or Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry combined with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT or HTL program or one year full time acceptable experience in histopathology.

  • HT/HTL certification received prior to year 2004: High school diploma/GED.

  • Required Licensure/Certification: Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 6 months of hire.
