Job summary

St. David's North Austin Medical Center is seeking a Histotechnologist to perform preparation of specimens for pathologist examination, including gross examination, cutting of blocks, staining of slides, and ensuring specimens are acceptable for diagnosis.

The role requires 1 year of histotechnologist experience and an Associate’s degree in Histology or Applied Science or completion of an accredited Histology/Pathology program.

Qualifications

• 1 year histotechnologist experience required.
• Associate degree in Histology or Applied Science or graduation from an accredited Histology/Pathology program.
• Strong understanding of specimen processing, staining, and quality control.

Responsibilities

• Accession specimens with proper patient information and log data.
• Process, embed, cut, mount and stain specimens.
• Accurately file slides, cassettes and tissue blocks.
• Prepare, label, and observe expiration dates on solutions and reagents.
• Assist with bone marrow aspirations, biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and renal biopsies.
• Assist with lab maintenance including cleaning, restocking, preventative maintenance, instrument performance checks, and discarding specimens.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Histotechnologist, you will perform all functions related to preparation of specimens for pathologist examination, including gross examination, preparation and cutting of blocks, and preparation and staining of slides. You will ensure the specimens taken are acceptable and sustainable in the required observation and diagnosis by the Pathologist. You will also be responsible for safety, maintenance, and quality control activities.

• You will accession specimens with proper patient information, and log specimens accurately with patient data, specimen types and sources

• You will process, embed, cut, mount and stain specimens

• You will accurately file slides, cassettes and tissue blocks

• You will prepare, label, and observe expiration dates on solutions and reagents

• You will assist with bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and renal biopsies

• You will assist with lab maintenance to include cleaning, restocking, preventative maintenance of equipment, instrument performance checks, and specimen discarding

What qualifications you will need:

Experience

• 1 year of previous experience as a Histotechnologist

Education

• Graduate of an accredited school or program of Histology or Pathology

This means it provides the highest level of care for pregnant and postpartum patients, especially those at high risk for maternal morbidity or mortality. The center includes a 95+ bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with 30+ private rooms, 10+ rooms for very small babies, and 10+ beds for babies needing neurological care. It also has 35+ labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, including Central Texas’ first low-intervention birthing suites with tubs. There are 95+ postpartum beds, 20+ antepartum beds, and Cesarean section surgical suites. The facility offers 24/7 neonatology coverage, OB/GYN hospitalists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, lactation consultants, and a midwifery program.
