Job Title: Histotech

Department: Anatomic Pathology

Location: Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital

Hours: 40 hours a week

Shift: Mon-Fri 2pm-10pm

This is a state-of-the-art laboratory operating 24/7, where you can utilize your training, experience, and skills to learn and grow. The AP Lab performs over 75,000 cases annually and includes on-site IHC (Immunohistochemistry) and Molecular labs, offering significant opportunities for professional development. The lab is accredited by CAP, JCAHO; certified by CLIA, and registered with the FDA.

Education

  • Associates Degree in Science or Applied Science (or equivalent) and completion of an accredited training program in Histotechnology.
  • May consider two years of histology work experience with an Associate degree in Science OR a High School Diploma and successful completion of an NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program.
  • Qualified candidates must meet one or both of the first two requirements.
  • Current HT or HTL ASCP certification preferred.

Experience

  • 1-3 years of histology experience preferred.

Position Purpose

Primary responsibilities include performing histology procedures related to accessioning and preparing pathology specimens. Additional duties involve special stain procedures, operating and maintaining automated staining equipment, tissue processors, microtomes, and cryostats. Prepare solutions and reagents for immunostaining and assist in preparing frozen section slides with the Pathologist.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Verify accuracy of patient information and submitted samples.
  • Accession and bill cytology and surgical specimens, enter data into LIS, and manage labels and worklists.
  • Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, and coverslipping per quality standards.
  • Conduct special and immunohistochemical stains as requested.
  • Prepare frozen sections for microscopic examination, ensuring quality standards.
  • Check stained slides against paraffin blocks and gross dictation for completeness; distribute slides and paperwork.
  • Perform quality control on histology equipment and maintain work areas.
  • Handle lab chemicals safely, including recycling and disposal.
  • Maintain quality control and maintenance records; participate in lab statistics.
  • File and retrieve slides for conferences or case reviews.
  • Participate in continuing education and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Foster good relationships, approach conflicts constructively, and contribute to problem-solving.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient, physician, and hospital information.

  • Ensure safety in job performance, report hazards, and unsafe practices.
