Job summary

SSM Health in Oklahoma City is seeking a histology lab technician to perform general histological duties under direct supervision. You will prepare histologic slides for microscopic examination and assist the pathologist with slide preparation and analysis.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent (or 10 years of experience). Day shift, full-time schedule, with routine lab responsibilities and ongoing competency development.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED, or 10 years of work experience.
• Histology-related training is a plus but not required.
• Ability to operate basic laboratory instruments.

Responsibilities

• Collect, label, process and preserve tissue specimens per lab procedures.
• Prepare tissue sections for immediate examination using frozen section technique.
• Operate computerized lab equipment to fix, dehydrate and infiltrate tissues.
• Embed, cut and stain tissues and pathology specimens with assistance.
• Perform basic histology special stains as appropriate with assistance.
• Maintain histology equipment and ensure supplies and work areas are clean.
• Perform general histology duties and cytology specimen prep.
• Record data and assist in proficiency testing in the lab.
• Maintain competencies and continue education to stay current.

Job Summary

Performs general histological duties under direct supervision, according to established procedures as well as preparation of histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Primary Responsibilities

• Collects, labels, processes and preserves tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
• Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination, using frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain specimens.
• Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by the pathologist.
• May perform embedding, cutting, and staining of tissues and pathology specimens received, with assistance.
• May perform basic histology special stains using manual or automated methods as appropriate, with assistance.
• May maintain equipment in histology as required, with assistance. Cleans and maintains adequate laboratory supplies and work areas.
• Performs general histological duties as well as cytology specimen prep work.
• Analyzes and records data. Assists in the proficiency testing program in the lab.
• Maintains competencies and continuing education to keep informed of new developments in field.
• Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
• Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
• Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
• Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
• Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
• Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
• Rare climbing.
