Job Details

The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. They receive, process, and prepare tissue samples for diagnosis using techniques such as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, Immunohistochemistry, and special stains. The role may also involve specialization in specific laboratory disciplines and requires effective teamwork within the department and with other departments to ensure quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Job Description

  1. Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff in alignment with Jefferson's values.
  2. Perform histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy, and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic review. Recognize deviations from expected results and analyze and correct problems promptly to facilitate diagnosis.
  3. Maintain reagents and equipment, ensuring proper quantities and condition. Troubleshoot instrument issues as needed to ensure accurate test results.
  4. Utilize computer systems to receive, validate, record, and transmit laboratory orders and test data efficiently.
  5. Analyze and document QC data, implementing corrective actions in consultation with supervisory staff to ensure accuracy and precision of instruments and staining quality.
  6. Communicate with clinical staff regarding specimen submission requirements, and provide information about test results and methodologies to keep medical staff informed of laboratory functions.
  7. Participate in the orientation and training of new employees and students, and engage in hospital and laboratory in-service and continuing education programs, including mandated annual proficiency testing, to maintain current knowledge and technical skills.
  8. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or managers.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education: An Associate's degree in a related life science or applied science field, or HEW/HHS or HT(ASCP) certification with laboratory experience in lieu of a degree.

Experience: 1-2 years' previous experience preferred; student training accepted. HT (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
