Job Description: Histology Laboratory Technician

Summary

Processes specimens for analysis and performs laboratory procedures under supervision. Handles all histology procedures, including quality control and instrument maintenance.

Principal Job Functions
  1. Commit to the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.
  2. Complete cases for pathologists efficiently, following guidelines.
  3. Stain slides to enhance visibility under microscopes.
  4. Embed surgical specimens in a timely and high-quality manner.
  5. Section surgical paraffin block tissue using a microtome.
  6. Operate, rotate, and clean laboratory equipment such as microtomes, tissue processors, and stainers.
  7. Perform stains and quality control on special and immunohistochemistry stains.
  8. Examine slides under a microscope to ensure quality standards.
  9. Detect deviations and report abnormalities for further study.
  10. Assist in troubleshooting departmental issues.
  11. Work independently and be cross-trained in all histology areas.
  12. Review and complete breast cancer tumor registry.
  13. Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure testing completion.
  14. Mentor and coach new employees as needed.
  15. Maintain professional growth through seminars and workshops.
  16. Participate in meetings, committees, and projects.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Maintain clinical competency, including age-specific skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and establish effective working relationships.
  • Prioritize tasks and work with minimal supervision.
Education and Experience

Must meet CLIA standards for High Complexity Testing, including 24 semester hours in science or medical laboratory technology, with specific coursework in chemistry and biology. A Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or completion of a recognized Histotechnician program is preferred. One year of recent histology lab experience required. Membership in the American Society of Clinical Pathology is mandatory.

Other Credentials / Certifications

Histotechnician (HT) Certified required. Maintain 12 CEUs annually.

Physical Requirements

Medium work exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, with visual color discrimination required.
