Summary:

The Histology Technician prepares tissue and fluidic specimen samples for microscopic examination and analysis by a pathologist.

1. Prepares tissue samples to reveal specific structural details for microscopic examination by a pathologist:

• Orients and embeds samples in liquid wax.

• Cuts tissue samples to appropriate thickness using microtome.

• Mounts specimens on slides.

• Stains tissues with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E).

Prepares cytological specimens to reveal specific cellular details for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Centrifuges fluid samples to determine cellularity and selects the appropriate processing method. Prepares slides for staining and analysis.

Corresponds with pathologists, performing additional specimen preparation and special stains as needed for further analysis.

Stores and retrieves samples as required by regulatory agencies. Prepares stored tissue blocks and slides for disposal in accordance with regulatory standards.

Troubleshoots, documents, and initiates corrective actions in response to instrument malfunctions, including contacting vendors for assistance. Monitors reagent and control slide levels, assisting in maintaining supplies.

Promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment by applying standard precautions and infection control principles. Maintains laboratory integrity through proper chemical hygiene and adherence to regulatory guidelines.

Other information:

• Registered as a Histology Technician (HT) with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Preferred:

• One (1) year of experience as a histology technician.
