Job summary

Labcorp in Houston, TX seeks a Histology Technician to process human tissue samples and prepare slides for microscopic examination. You will section tissue with a microtome, embed specimens, and perform immunohistochemical tests on FFPE sections.

The role includes staining, QC, and accurate reporting to support patient care. Ideal candidates hold an Associate’s degree in Histology or related science, with 1+ year lab experience or a histology certification.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Histology or related chemical/biological science with 1+ year clinical lab experience, or histology certification (min 9 months).
  • Familiarity with routine histology procedures and equipment.
  • ASCP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process tissue and body fluid specimens for microscopic exam.
  • Prepare histology slides from surgical specimens.
  • Section tissue with a microtome and mount on slides.
  • Perform immunohistochemical tests on FFPE tissue sections.
  • Process sections through staining procedures.
  • Orient and embed surgical specimens.
  • Prepare staining reagents for procedures.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.
  • Operate and maintain lab instruments.
  • Document equipment maintenance and log data.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
  • Adhere to QC policies and SOPs for specimen handling, processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed.

Job description

Job Responsibilities
  • Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic exam.
  • Perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens.
  • Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide.
  • Perform various immunohistochemical tests on formalin‑fixed paraffin‑embedded tissue sections.
  • Process mounted sections through routine and special staining procedures.
  • Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens.
  • Prepare the stains and reagents needed for special procedures.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.
  • Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments.
  • Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Record equipment log data accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies.
  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Histology OR Associate’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science with 1 or more years of experience in a clinical lab (within the past 5 years) OR completion of a Histology certification program (minimum 9 months).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or prior LabCorp experience.
  • Histology and/or ASCP certifications.
Additional Job Standards
  • Familiarity with routine histology procedures and equipment.
  • Immunohistochemistry experience.
  • Comfortability embedding both large and small specimens.
  • Ability to accurately read all labels and documents.
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a high‑volume laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory SOPs and safety protocols.
  • Able to pass a standardized color blindness test.
