Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines is seeking a Histotechnician to support tissue processing and slide preparation in a hospital histology lab. You will work Monday through Friday, 6 am–2:30 pm, under the supervision of pathologists and lab leadership.

Candidates should have either an approved histotechnician program or 60 semester hours in biology and chemistry with histopathology experience; HT (ASCP) certification is preferred. MercyOne offers competitive pay and career growth.

Responsibilities

• Performs all steps in tissue preparation for diagnosis by a pathologist and prepares slides.
• Maintains equipment, conducts preventive maintenance, and troubleshoots instrumentation.
• Files blocks and slides and supports instrument evaluation, implementation and training.
• Assists with quality management systems and process improvement initiatives.
• Operates laboratory information systems and related software; adheres to LEAN standards.
• Trains new employees and manages supply inventory.
• Rotates call as part of an on-site histology team.
• Supports ongoing method evaluation and collaboration with pathology staff.
• Ensures accurate documentation and compliance with lab protocols.

As a Histotechnician at MercyOne you will p erform a variety of histology laboratory procedures used to produce tissue slides, which aids the pathologist in diagnosis and recommended treatment.

• Performs all steps in the preparation of tissue for diagnosis by a pathologist . Examine tissue structures and characteristics as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults.

• Performs preventative maintenance and basic trouble shooting of instrumentation and equipment.

• Performs all steps in the recycling of reagents.

• Files blocks and slides.

• Assists with selection of new instruments or method evaluation, implementation, and training.

• Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.

• Utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards.

• Trains new employees.

• Maintains supply inventory.

• Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.

• Rotates call.

Schedule

Monday-Friday 6am-2:30pm, no holidays or weekends

General Requirements

• Completion of an approved histotechnician program OR at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND one year full-time acceptable experience in histopathology under the supervision of a pathologist.

• Certification as a Histotechnician HT (ASCP) is preferred.
