Responsibilities

This is a limited tenure position for up to 3 years, with potential to reduce to 0.5 FTE if accepted into the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences (MCSHS) Histology Technician Program. You must work towards prerequisites: https://college.mayo.edu/academics/health-sciences-education/histology-technician-program-arizona-florida-and-minnesota/.

As a Histotech Assistant in the Histology Laboratory, you will perform technical procedures under supervision, including embedding tissue, microtomy, and other lab tasks. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Retrieval and verification of patient samples
  • Tracking specimens
  • Accessioning
  • Specimen photography
  • Processing tissue specimens
  • Maintaining lab equipment
  • Performing Hematoxylin and Eosin staining
  • Performing coverslipping
  • Case assembly and distribution
  • Handling outside/consultation material
  • Troubleshooting equipment and reagent issues
  • Reagent preparation
  • Reviewing logs
  • Filing and retrieving tissue blocks/slides
  • Handling/disposal of hazardous chemicals
  • Knowledge of Lab Information System
  • Record retention
  • Answering phones
  • Fostering an inclusive team environment

Note: This position typically does not meet ASCP Route 2 eligibility for Histology Technician Examination. Employees are required to work 2 years in this role before applying for other positions within Mayo Clinic. It is not eligible for visa sponsorship, and Mayo does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an associate's degree or a high school diploma/GED with 2 years of relevant experience. The position is limited to 3 years, with potential to reduce to 0.5 FTE upon acceptance into the MCSHS Histology Technician Program.

Additional Requirements
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
  • Laboratory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
