Job summary

The City of Alexandria, Virginia, invites qualified candidates to apply for the Historic Preservation Coordinator in the Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA). The role manages the preservation of fifteen historic sites, budgets, and coordination with City agencies to safeguard historical assets.

Ideal candidates have strong project management, documentation, and communication skills, with experience in preservation facilities and a willingness to work some evenings or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree in History, African American History, Public History, Art History, Museum Studies, Archaeology, Museum Education, American History and/or other closely related field.
• Two (2) years preservation and/or collections management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Preferred MA in Historic Preservation, American History, Architecture, American Studies, Museum Studies, or related field; five+ years of related experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee maintenance, restoration, and long-term preservation of OHA buildings and cultural landscapes.
• Budget, prioritize, and implement site maintenance and preservation improvements in coordination with City staff.
• Write scopes of work and manage procurement with contractors; administer facilities budget and maintenance schedules.
• Monitor expenditures, perform cost-benefit analyses, and set priorities for facilities management.
• Serve as a point of contact for maintenance and preservation issues and provide site condition updates.
