Base pay range

$18.00/hr - $20.00/hr

Grand Light of Seymouris an experienced restorer of historic lighting fixtures and a manufacturer of custom lighting fixtures. Our lighting restoration capabilities include research for historic accuracy, drawings, metal fabrication, welding, polishing, painting, abrasive blasting, refinishing metal components, glass fabrication, replacing all electrical components, rewiring, and testing in accordance with UL standards.

Position Title: Historic Lighting Conservator & Conservation Technician

Job Description:The Historic Lighting Conservator & Conservation Technician’s primary responsibility is to assist in the conservation or restoration of historic lighting fixtures from various landmark and prominent historic buildings. This role requires an individual with exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work as part of a team. The candidate should also have a willingness to learn the craft and contribute to the overall restoration process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the conservation and restoration of historic lighting fixtures, including research and analysis for historical accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the restoration team on project planning and execution for complex, high-profile restoration projects.
  • Prepare materials for surface cleaning and restoration, including plaster, metal, and wood surfaces, utilizing state-of-the-art commercial cleaning systems, industrial burn-off thermal ovens/heaters, and media blast cabinets.
  • Perform surface stabilization, repair, blending, and conservation of existing finishes on historical lighting fixtures.
  • Apply custom finishes and protective coatings (waxing) using brush or spray techniques.
  • Handle delicate and fragile materials, ensuring their preservation and integrity during the restoration process.
  • Document the entire restoration process for historical records and client reporting, including before and after photos, material specifications, and progress notes.
  • Support the metal and glass fabrication process in creating custom replacement components for restored fixtures.
  • Assist in the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of historical fixtures.
  • Ensure all electrical components are replaced or rewired in compliance with UL standards and safety requirements.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on restored fixtures to ensure quality and functionality.
  • Adhere to best practices for conservation, ensuring that materials and finishes are used in a historically accurate manner.
  • Communicate with team members, supervisors, and clients to ensure projects meet deadlines, quality standards, and client expectations.
  • Travel occasionally to other states to support project needs and on-site restoration efforts.

Qualifications:

Experience -Related industry experience in architectural painting, antique restoration, landmark preservation, and material finishing preferred.

Skills -

  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
  • Ability to work with a variety of materials (plaster, metal, wood, glass) and finishes.
  • Knowledge of historical restoration practices, materials, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with electrical components, rewiring, and UL standards is a plus.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
