Job summary

HCA Healthcare is seeking a Histology Technologist PRN to join our laboratory services. The role involves histology and cytology processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, IHC, block preparation, and case organization in a busy pathology workflow.

Applicants should have a high school diploma with histology training or an accredited histotechnology program, plus MT/ASCP certification. States licenses may apply. We value teamwork, quality control, and proactive problem solving.

Qualifications

• Performs histology and cytology procedures including processing, embedding, microtomy and staining.
• Ensures proper sample, block and slide identification.
• Prepares reagents and maintains staining procedures.
• Maintains quality control and QA documentation for instrumentation and procedures.
• Uses independent judgement to ensure accuracy and proper equipment performance.
• Troubleshoots issues and takes corrective action promptly.

Job Summary and Qualifications

You Will:

• Perform histology and cytology procedures including specimen processing/fixation, cell block preparation, embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, routine stains, IHC and special stains, and case organization in accordance with department procedures.




• Assure positive sample, block and slide identification




• Prepare and maintain reagents for routine stains and histology procedures.




• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and instrumentation per manufacturer & department procedures and per department schedule.




• Adhere to department policy with regards to performance and documentation of quality control and quality assurance for instrumentation, equipment and procedures performed.




• Utilize independent judgement and problem-solving skills to ensure the accuracy of procedures performed and proper equipment performance.




• Troubleshoots and takes appropriate corrective action to resolve and/or elevate issues in a timely manner for resolution.




• Adhere to department policy with regards to performance and documentation of quality control and quality assurance for instrumentation, equipment and procedures performed.

You Should Have:

• High School Diploma AND minimum two years of histology experience




• OR High School Diploma AND completion of an accredited program in Histotechnology




• OR Associate's degree in Chemistry, Biology AND one year of histology experience




• OR Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology or Chemistry




• National Certification as a MT (ASCP) or HT (ASCP) required




• State license where required (CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, RI, WV)




• Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes




• Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples




• Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist




• Demonstrates good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation and staining of specimens




• General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements




• Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills. Sets a positive example.

• Effective and proactive problem solving and decision-making skills
