Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Histology Technician to monitor technical functions within histology, ensure quality of work, and support adherence to JCAHO, DHEC, CLIA, and CAP standards.

You will perform the duties of a staff histotechnician with strong interpersonal skills, problem identification, and resolution abilities, ensuring laboratory compliance in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree required.
  • No experience required.
  • HT(ASCP) certification by ASCP BOC or equivalent preferred. If not certified, must have completed a NACCLS Accredited HT/HTL Program and be certification eligible. Certification must be achieved within 1 year of hire; until certification is achieved, salary will be 10% less.

Job Summary

Monitors the technical functions within histology. These functions include but are not limited to quality of work, procedures and methods, and expenses. Performs the duties of a staff histotechnician. The Histology Technician possesses excellent interpersonal skills, problem identification and resolution abilities, and assures laboratory compliance with the standards set forth by JCAHO, DHEC, CLIA, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Qualifications

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors, and working outside in temperature extremes.
  • Ability to work from elevated areas and in confined/cramped spaces.
  • Ability to perform kneeling positions, bend at the waist, twist at the waist, squat, and perform pinching operations.
  • Ability to perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands, firm grasping, and fine manipulation with fingers and hands.
  • Ability to reach overhead and in all directions.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders.
  • Ability to fully use both legs and maintain balance and coordination.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted and lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted.
  • Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force as required for transfers and patient handling.
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes.
  • Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance; match or discriminate between colors; determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
  • Good peripheral vision capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
  • Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements.
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and in a latex‑safe environment.
  • Selective positions: maintain good olfactory sensory function; qualify physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
