Job summary

Penrose - St. Francis Health Services is seeking a Histology Technician Certified to prepare and process tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist.

You will perform fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining to produce high-quality slides for diagnosis. You will apply specialized certification and technical expertise to maintain rigorous lab standards, ensuring accurate diagnostic support and reliable tissue specimens.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program
  • HS and 60 college/university semester hrs, with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining
  • Associates degree with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining
  • Will consider candidates with High School diploma and two or more years of experience in all areas of routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize duties

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prepare tissues using histological techniques, including labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping
  • Section and stain histological specimens for routine and special studies, including preparation of stains and solutions
  • Prioritize work to meet laboratory turnaround time standards
  • Assist pathologists within the established scope of practice
  • Monitor inventory, assist in ordering and stocking, and log reagents and supplies
  • Demonstrate competency in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining equipment while multitasking with limited supervision

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Histology Technician Certified, you will prepare and process tissue samples for routine histologic techniques to be examined under a microscope by a pathologist. You are responsible for ensuring that all tissue is handled with the precision necessary for accurate medical evaluation.

Every day, you will perform essential histologic techniques, including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Your daily work provides the high-quality slides required for the pathologist’s evaluation and diagnosis.

To be successful in your role, you will apply your specialized certification and technical expertise to maintain rigorous laboratory standards. Your commitment to detail ensures that the diagnostic process is supported by reliable and expertly prepared tissue specimens.

  • Receive and prepare tissues using accepted histological techniques, including proper labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
  • Section and stain histological specimens for routine and special studies, including the preparation of various stains, solutions, and compounds following written technical procedures.
  • Prioritize work appropriately to meet laboratory turnaround time standards and ensure efficient use of time.
  • Assist pathologists within the established scope of practice.
  • Monitor supply inventory, assist in ordering and stocking, and properly log reagents and supplies into the lab according to laboratory inventory procedures.
  • Demonstrate competency in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining equipment according to manufacturer specifications, while multitasking effectively with limited supervision.

We are offering a $10,000 Sign on Bonus in addition up to $8,000 relocation assistance to new hires who meet the eligibility requirements

Job Requirements
Required
