- Receive and correctly identify specimens and prepare them for microscopic examination by the pathologist
- Perform routine histopathological tasks including microtomy, embedding, immunohistochemistry, and special staining
- Assist with frozen sections and radiology procedures using appropriate instrumentation
- Use LIS, HIS, and laboratory software systems
- Comply with CAP, accrediting organization, CLIA, and other regulatory requirements
- Troubleshoot methodology, instrumentation, and procedural problems
- Perform, record, and monitor quality control data and instrument maintenance
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, accreditation testing, proficiency testing, and annual competencies
- Participate in training new personnel and mentor others
- Process slides, tissues, special stains, radiology procedures, frozen sections, and cytological preparations
- Maintain specimen integrity and process specimens according to accepted procedures
- Maintain a clean, stocked, safe work area and follow laboratory safety procedures
- Prepare fine needle aspiration totes and provide appropriate fixatives
- Pick up pathology specimens from hospital departments and assist the pathologist with accessioning, organizing, numbering, and labeling
- Gross specimens as appropriate
- Maintain stains and change solutions in tissue processors and automatic stainers
- Perform pathology sendouts to reference laboratories
- Freeze and cut tissue on a cryostat; stain and coverslip frozen-section slides and touch-preparation smears
- Monitor supplies and perform department- and shift-specific duties
Requirements
- Associate's Degree in a related field or biological science
- Histotechnician (HT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 2 years
- Demonstrated competence in slide and tissue processing preparation with minimal error
- Understanding of scientific theories and laboratory procedure techniques
- Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and its basic and complex principles
- Knowledge of LIS, HIS, and applicable laboratory software systems
- Ability to troubleshoot methodology, instrumentation, and procedure issues
- Ability to perform and document quality control and instrument maintenance
- Ability to comply with CAP, CLIA, accrediting organization, and other regulatory requirements
- Ability to prioritize and complete testing in a timely manner
- Ability to maintain specimen integrity and follow laboratory safety procedures
- Ability to perform microtomy, embedding, immunohistochemistry, special staining, frozen sections, cryostat work, and cytological preparations
