Job summary

UNC Health in Raleigh, NC seeks a Histology Technician to prepare and process tissue and fluid specimens for pathologist analysis, including embedding, cutting and staining tissue samples.

You will review orders, prepare cassettes, perform fixation, embed sections, and conduct staining with quality assurance. Night shift, onsite, 40 hours weekly, with benefits and ongoing QA documentation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prefer Associate's Degree in Histology.

Responsibilities

• Reviews physician orders for accuracy and enters tissue and procedures into the laboratory information system.
• Accurately prepares and labels cassettes prior to pathologist grossing.
• Performs tissue fixation and maintains tissue processor per QA procedures.
• Embeds tissue and cuts sections for microscopic examination using a microtome.
• Performs routine staining procedures and ensures stain quality for pathologist review.
• Assists in collecting QA indicator data and maintains supplies for the histology section.

Summary

Prepares and processes tissue and fluid specimens for analysis by a pathologist and prepares slides for pathologist review by embedding, cutting and staining tissue samples.

Schedule

Tues 12am - Saturday 8:30am

Responsibilities

• Reviews physician orders for accuracy and enters tissue and procedures into the laboratory information system. Obtains corrective action when needed. Documents specimen identification issues according to QA policy.
• Accurately prepares and labels cassettes prior to pathologist grossing.
• Performs tissue fixation according to procedure. Troubleshoots any alarms of warning messages on the processing equipment. Performs maintenance on the tissue processor according to quality assurance procedure and schedule.
• Embeds processed tissue and cuts sections for microscopic examination using a microtome.
• Performs routine staining procedures and ensures quality of stains are acceptable by pathologist review. Orders special stains or procedures as needed from reference laboratory and enters requisition into information system for tracking.
• Assists histology section head in collecting and documenting quality assurance indicator data.
• Performs pathology transcription and orders supplies when needed.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prefer Associate's Degree in Histology.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

• None required, but eligibility for certification is recommended.

Professional Experience Requirements

• Requires minimum 2 years experience working in a clinical laboratory performing histology procedures with a licensed pathologist.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements

• Knowledge of anatomy.
