Job summary

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq ARWR) is seeking a Scientist I for the Histotechnology team within the Biology Department in San Diego.

The role supports preclinical drug development by planning tissue collection, processing, embedding, sectioning, and performing histology and IHC staining. You will execute routine and specialized methods, communicate with study stakeholders, and maintain audit-ready records in LIMS/ELN.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline.
• BS with a minimum of seven (7) years relevant histology laboratory experience or a MS with 3+ years of academic/industry laboratory experience.
• Proficiency with microtomes, cryostats, cassette/slide printers, automated slide stainers, and microscopes.
• Extensive experience in IHC/IF staining, protocol development, validation, and troubleshooting (including antibody titration and antigen retrieval).
• Strong project- and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple studies and deadlines; effective written and verbal communication.
• Advanced computer skills (e.g., Excel and imaging software).
• Ability to process valuable/delicate samples and to prepare tissue for pathologist interpretation.

Responsibilities

• Study workflow: translate study requirements into practical histology work plans and present interim results to program stakeholders.
• Sample handling: coordinate specimen receipt, labeling/barcoding, and chain-of-custody with audit-ready records in LIMS/ELN.
• Processing: perform routine tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning with minimal artifacts.
• Staining/assay: execute H&E, special stains, and IHC/IF; assist in protocol design and troubleshooting.
• Microscopy & reporting: conduct QC, identify regions, and compile data summaries for leads.
• Quality & safety: adhere to SOPs, biosafety rules, and contribute to continuous improvement (5S/Lean).
• Instrumentation & inventory: operate and calibrate microtomes, cryostats, stainers, printers, microscopes; track reagents and ordering.
