Job description

Description

The Histology Lab Assistant supports the mission, vision, and values of NM, complies with the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and adheres to all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The role involves assisting in entry-level histology tasks such as specimen processing and preparing surgical and autopsy microscopic slides. The Lab Assistant communicates with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen issues and participates in the laboratory occurrence management program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supports histology procedures by staining and coverslipping slides using automation and manual methods, labeling, and documenting appropriately.
  2. Reviews protocol files for Gross Only specimens and monitors logs for routine slide submissions.
  3. Performs basic embedding procedures for surgical and autopsy tissues, and routine paraffin block reconciliation.
  4. Maintains accurate manual and electronic records, investigates discrepancies, and communicates case status inquiries.
  5. Uses laboratory equipment proficiently and safely, performing routine maintenance and reporting malfunctions.
  6. Files paraffin blocks daily and transports specimens, blocks, and slides as needed.
  7. Ensures a clean, safe work environment, adhering to SOPs for disinfection and spill cleanup.
  8. Monitors inventory levels, reports supply issues, and fosters effective communication within the team.
  9. Participates in safety, infection control, and staff training activities, and seeks personal development opportunities.
  10. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma.
  • Keyboard proficiency and computer experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Preferred:

  • A.S. degree in biological or related sciences.
  • Experience in laboratory support or health-related fields.
