Job Summary :

Works with histology staff members to coordinate the movement of histology and cytology specimens within the department. Prepares materials for cytology examination. Provides general lab assistance to the Histology / Cytology section and handles various office duties.

Job Essentials :
  • Receives tissue, organ, and other specimens from operating rooms, endoscopy, and other areas of the medical center as well as outside offices.
  • Accession and efficiently organize all specimens received. Electronically enter all specimen information into the pathology computer system.
  • Place charges in the computer for pathology procedures.
  • Print cassettes and slides using the computer system.
  • Follow up on and troubleshoot problems or missing specimens. Clarify issues with outside physicians, nursing units, etc., as needed.
  • Prepare all cytology materials, including logging specimens, generating accession logs, preparing Thin Prep materials, cytocentrifuging body fluids, and staining smears for cytological examination.
  • Perform and document maintenance of all general, cytology instruments, and staining logs.
  • Prepare cytology specimens on a STAT basis when required.
  • Prepare specimens for send-outs, complete reference lab requisitions, attach insurance information and diagnoses, and package specimens properly for transport.
  • Discard leftover, unused material on processed cytology specimens after 2 weeks.
  • Maintain the histology and cytology laboratory in proper order according to all regulatory requirements for quality, cleanliness, and safety.
  • File signed-out slides and blocks.
  • Answer telephone calls for pathology and other department offices with excellent phone etiquette. Transfer calls and/or take messages for department managers and pathologists.
  • Maintain a high level of quality and safety.
  • Maintain patient and employee confidentiality in managing information.
  • Meet regulatory and annual health assessment requirements.
  • Display a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all hospital staff and the community.
  • Maintain high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments, and co-workers.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
Education Requirements :
  • High School diploma required.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a high-pressure environment.
Working Conditions :
  • Exposure to possible infectious agents, unpleasant odors, and contaminated specimens. Stands and sits intermittently.

Englewood Health provides a minimum rate to comply with New Jersey Law. The pay rate for each position is determined based on relevant experience, qualifications, skills, etc. The minimum rate does not include bonuses, incentives, differential pay, or other compensation. Eligible employees may also receive comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and wellness resources. Minimum rate: $19.00
