Job summary

SonoThera in South San Francisco is seeking a (Senior) Research Associate to support gene therapy drug development through histology. The role involves handling FFPE and fresh frozen tissues from mice, rats, and NHPs, performing stains, and analyzing images to support biomarker assessment.

Work is on-site Monday–Friday, reporting to the Sr. Director, Vivarium Operations & Bioanalytics, with a focus on assay optimization and SOP documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical science, or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant laboratory experience.
• Experience with FFPE tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning.
• Experience with H&E, PAS, Masson’s Trichrome; IHC/ISH staining is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and evaluate tissue samples for biomarker assessment in gene therapy programs.
• Process, embed, and section FFPE and fresh frozen tissue across mice, rats, and NHPs.
• Perform routine and specialized stains (H&E, PAS, Trichrome, ISH, IHC, IF).
• Image stained slides and support qualitative/quantitative assessment.
• Maintain chain of custody and document methods in SOPs and study records.
