Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years in health information management, medical coding, or a related healthcare discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of people leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Current RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC certification maintained throughout employment.
  • Strong senior-level outpatient coding experience, including E/M charging and injection/infusion charging.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a HIM Outpatient Coding Supervisor based in United States.

This is a full-time, fully remote leadership opportunity within health information management and medical coding.

The role provides expert guidance on complex outpatient coding and documentation cases while supporting coding quality and compliance.

You will serve as a trusted resource for coding professionals, clinical documentation teams, physicians, managers, and other stakeholders.

A key focus will be identifying coding trends and errors, strengthening education, and improving documentation and coding accuracy.

The position combines advanced technical expertise with people leadership, audit experience, and cross-functional collaboration.

You will help ensure coding practices remain accurate, ethical, consistent, and aligned with applicable standards and regulatory requirements.

Accountabilities
  • Provide expert guidance to coders, compliant documentation management teams, and revenue integrity professionals on complex patient‑care cases and appropriate code assignment.
  • Analyze clinical documentation and coding information to determine accurate, compliant, and ethical coding practices.
  • Review medical records identified through coding analytics and SMART tools to detect patterns, recurring errors, and opportunities for targeted education.
  • Identify opportunities to improve coder performance, documentation quality, coding accuracy, and compliance through focused education and feedback.
  • Serve as a technical subject‑matter expert and resource for department leadership, coding staff, physicians, administrative teams, and external customers.
  • Provide clear interpretation and clarification of coding standards, documentation requirements, regulatory guidelines, and applicable industry practices.
  • Support coder audit and education activities, using findings to strengthen coding quality and consistency.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of outpatient coding, including evaluation and management services, charging for injections and infusions, and related coding and billing processes.
  • Lead and support a team environment through coaching, knowledge sharing, performance guidance, and effective people management.
  • Maintain professional coding credentials and stay current with changes to coding standards, regulations, terminology, and healthcare documentation practices.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and projects as assigned by management.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience; relevant experience or an advanced degree may substitute for formal education.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in health information management, medical coding, or a related healthcare discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of people leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Current certification as one of the following: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC, with the credential maintained throughout employment.
  • Strong senior‑level outpatient coding experience, including knowledge of outpatient and inpatient chart coding, evaluation and management (E/M) charging, injection and infusion charging, data management, coder auditing, and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex clinical documentation and determine appropriate coding based on established standards and guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of coding compliance, documentation requirements, medical terminology, and healthcare regulatory practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify coding trends and develop effective educational or corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex coding concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and support coding professionals while maintaining high standards for accuracy and compliance.
  • Experience with healthcare information systems such as Epic, Cerner, Solventum, or SMART is preferred.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is preferred.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to ethical coding practices.
